Lately, I've been thinking about seasons and change. Spring is here but winter isn't ready to leave. We had sunny days in short sleeves and snowy days with slushy roads, side by side. I’m ready for a little less drastic change in the weather!
Now that I’m well into mid-life, I tend to reflect more on the past seasons of my life, compare ages of those before and after me, what they've accomplished, and what I've accomplished. There are times when I've been very content and change isn't welcomed and there are times when I can’t wait for change.
Change will happen, whether we want it to or not. I remember when my son, Wesley, was 9 years old. It was a wonderful time when he still thought Dad was great and was the smartest person alive. I told him then, “Don’t ever grow up… but if you do, don’t ever change the way you think about me… and if you do, just fake it.” Well, needless to say, that didn't work out! Now he’s 20, I’m ready for some changes to happen… and I keep reminding myself that they will.
Heraclitus, an ancient Ephesian philosopher, was half right when he said, “The only constant in life is change.” Financial, political, mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical situations all change. But God never changes… He is the only true constant in our lives. He is the same yesterday, today, and for eternity.
During times of extreme change, especially in those obscure times, we have to remind ourselves that God doesn't change and that He is always faithful to guide us. He knows exactly where we are in life and as our Heavenly Father, looks for those positive changes in our lives, and fortunately grants “change” opportunities.
Solomon, in the book of Ecclesiastes, talks about how meaningless much of life can be and that there is a season for everything but we have to remember that the seasons aren't meaningless. I remind myself… Don’t fight change… enjoy the season you’re in, regardless of how difficult it may be.
Be certain that God is faithful, that there is a time for everything, and one thing is for sure… the current season will change!
