Advent Devotional

At Global Action we equip our Foundations students to know something, to be someone, and to do something.

  • We teach our student to know the Word of God. We equip them to correctly interpret God’s Word and identify theological errancy.
  • We disciple our students to be a church leader, embodying the character of Christ and humbly lead others into a deeper walk with God.
  • We teach our students to then catalyze their skills into action and do what God is calling them in their community.  Application is vital to our faith walk.  Their final module is creating and implementing a ministry strategy.

In this Advent season, will you walk in the shoes of our Global Action students as they are learning and growing in Christ all over the world? Like our incredible students, let’s open our Bibles to Isaiah 9:6-7 and experience incarnational Christ in His Word this Christmas!

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”

Isaiah 9:6-7

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…”

  • What does it mean to you personally that Jesus was given to us, not earned or deserved?
  • How does the humility of Christ’s birth speak to areas of your life where you need to embrace humility?
  • Where do you need to receive Jesus again with childlike wonder this Advent?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me receive You again with fresh wonder. Let the gift of Your coming soften my heart and open my eyes to the gift of Your abounding grace.  Amen.

“The government will be on His shoulders…”

  • What burdens are you carrying that need to be shifted onto His shoulders?
  • How does knowing that Jesus is sovereign affect your anxieties about the world or your future?
  • What area of your life needs to come under Christ’s Lordship more fully?

Prayer: Jesus, I place my burdens onto Your strong shoulders. Teach me to trust Your Lordship in every part of my life.  Amen.

“He will be called Wonderful Counselor…”

  • Where do you need wisdom and guidance from Jesus right now?
  • What decisions or difficulties do you need to bring before Christ?
  • How can you intentionally listen for His voice this Advent?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Wonderful Counselor, illuminate my path. Speak Your wisdom into the decisions that are before me today.  Amen.

“Mighty God…”

  • What situation in your life requires God’s strength instead of your own?
  • How does remembering Jesus as Mighty God strengthen your faith where hope feels thin?
  • What past victories of God can you reflect on to renew trust today?

Prayer: Lord, You are mighty! Strengthen me where I am weak and remind me that nothing is impossible for You.  Amen.

“Everlasting Father…”

  • Where do you need to experience God’s fatherly love or comfort?
  • What false narratives about God as Father do you need to surrender?
  • How does Jesus’ eternal nature bring comfort in instability or transition?

Prayer:  Everlasting Father, wrap me in Your love. Heal my view of You where it has been distorted, and may I stand on Your strong foundation and know Your faithful presence.  Amen

“Prince of Peace…”

  • What anxieties, conflicts, or restlessness need the peace of Christ right now?
  • What would it look like to slow down and create space for God’s peace each day?
  • Are there relationships where Jesus is calling you to be a peacemaker?

Prayer:  Prince of Peace, calm my heart. Fill the anxious places with Your presence and make me an instrument of Your peace to those around me.  Amen.

“Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end…”

  • How does God’s eternal kingdom reshape your view of temporary struggles?
  • What does it mean to live for an eternal Kingdom in a hurried culture?
  • Where is God inviting you to cultivate peace that reflects His Kingdom?

Prayer:  Lord, fix my eyes on Your eternal kingdom. Help me live today with a Kingdom perspective and give me courage to live out Your purpose for my life.  Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters, Merry Christmas to you. May your hearts rejoice in King Jesus this season!
