Medical Training to Theological Education: Isaac’s Story
Posted on October 07, 2025

Isaac Gon (pictured above right) grew up in Ulang, South Sudan. Though not a pastor by trade, his heart is a church planter. At a young age, he and his family tragically fled civil war to make home in a refugee camp in neighboring Ethiopia. During the decade of living there, he trained as a nurse and eventually felt the call from God to return to his homeland. Because of his medical training, he was able to cross the border back into South Sudan for several months at a time to serve his people.
When Isaac heard about the Foundations program, he earnestly desired to establish the theological training program in his homeland. Ulang is a very remote region of South Sudan, without roads or any kind of infrastructure that would easily accommodate a seminary. So, the program would come to him. After connecting Global Action staff with Isaac, the Foundations program began in 2024. Their nation may be suffering a crisis of civil unrest, but these students persevere. With hunger for the Biblical knowledge and ministry skills, Isaac’s passion is for leaders to be equipped with tools they need to serve the growing church in Ulang.
Recently, the class has had to press pause due to realities of conflict. Would you pray they are able to continue soon, and God would bring lasting peace and their completion of the program?
One leader like Isaac, filled with calling from God, connecting and inviting other church leaders, has potential for limitless impact to transform his community for Christ!

As the world’s newest nation, South Sudan ranks 22nd most unreached out of 177 countries (https://stratus.earth). Thank God for indigenous leaders like Isaac who carry the mantle of leadership among the growing church!
